Officer Watson succumbed to injuries as a result of an accidental gun shot wound to the right leg he sustained three weeks prior.

He had taken a prisoner to the city jail and returned to his beat in an automobile. As he stepped from his car at the intersection of Sixth and DeSiard Streets, his service revolver fell from its holster and hit the pavement at which time it discharged one shot.

Officer Watson did not immediately get the wound treated but was later admitted to St. Francis Sanitarium for surgery on the splintered bone in his leg.  The operation was successfully performed a week before his death.

He was a member of the Moose Lodge and unmarried.

Internment was at the City (Monroe) Cemetery.
