Officer W.J. HaynieEnd of Watch: Friday, April 20, 1894 Biographical Information Incident Details |
Officer Haynie was shot and killed after responding to a call of a man with a gun. The suspect, Henry Gulledge, and his companion, J. O. Johnston, both from Lincoln Parish, had just had a dispute with the owner of a bar and the suspect fired several shots at the bar owner.
The bar owner called for the police at which time Officer Haynie responded. When Officer Haynie arrived at the bar, The Ruby Bell House, the suspects had fled the scene on foot. Officer Haynie pursued the suspects and caught up with them in the eastern end of town at Five Points at which time he was joined by Officer Hugh Biggar.
Officer Haynie ordered the suspects to stop and “drop the gun” to which Gulledge replied “I’ll drop it”. Instead, Gulledge and Johnston opened fire on both officers. Both Officer Haynie and Officer Biggar returned fire and killed Gulledge. Johnston fled the scene but was apprehended a few minutes later in front of Garretson’s Opera House.
The Coroner’s jury rendered a verdict that W.J. Haynie came to his death by a shot from a .38 caliber pistol in the hands of Henry Gulledge and J.O. Johnston.
